What BBN said about it
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorWell, here's the story. Deadline reports a wind-whipped brushfire ignited in western Malibu today and grew from one acre to five in about fifteen minutes.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorIt's called the Bryson Fire, first reported shortly before five Pacific near Mulholland Highway and Encinal Canyon Road. What goes through your mind?
Tobias WexcombeHonestly, fire is a partner to me. I've spent a long time getting to know its moods, mostly in a trailer with good lighting.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorA trailer.
Tobias WexcombeA very warm trailer.
Tobias WexcombeAnyway, my new show, Smolder Ridge, is about a firefighter who is also a sommelier, and he fights blazes by pairing them.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorPairing them with what, exactly?
Tobias WexcombeWith the wrong wine, so they get embarrassed and go out. It's very emotional, and I did all my own wine.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorNow the tough one, Tobias. Have you ever actually stood near a real wildfire? Yes or no.
Tobias WexcombeI have stood near the idea of one. For the record, I was there in spirit, wearing a very supportive scarf.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorSo is that a no?
Tobias WexcombeIt's a no. I once evacuated a barbecue because a hot dog caught. I cried, and a child had to hold my helmet.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorThat's honest, and I respect it. Let's do a lightning round, quick answers only.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorFavorite thing to wear on set?
Tobias WexcombeThe helmet. It's the only part of the costume that has never been on fire, which is why I treasure it.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorBest snack on a long shoot day?
Tobias WexcombeCheese cubes. For the record, I was there in spirit when somebody opened the good tray.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorLast one. What would you tell people near the Malibu fire tonight?
Tobias WexcombeListen to the real firefighters and ignore the guy from the poster. Which is me. I'm the poster.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorBest advice of the night. Tell everyone where they can catch Smolder Ridge.
Tobias WexcombeStreaming Friday, and please watch it with the windows closed. Chip, thank you for your bravery tonight.
Chip Darnell · U.S. News AnchorI was in a studio, Tobias. Go check on your helmet.
