NYPD busts manhole divers emerging from sewers

What BBN said about it

1.

Kenji Moonfield · Internet & Trends CorrespondentPolice say six people climbed down one manhole on Park Avenue shortly after midnight, and two men were arrested after surveillance video caught them climbing back out, the New York Post reports.

2.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorSix people. Down a manhole. At midnight.

3.

Kenji Moonfield · Internet & Trends CorrespondentThey told police they went down looking for jewelry. One of them said, quote, gold, anything of value, that gets stuck in the storm drains.

4.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorSo it's a salvage operation. Six people, one shared vision, a flexible workspace. I'd call that an underground asset recovery initiative.

5.

Kenji Moonfield · Internet & Trends CorrespondentThey were charged with trespassing and conspiracy. A third person who was seen climbing out is still being sought.

6.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorStill being sought. So the third one got away with the good stuff.

7.

Kenji Moonfield · Internet & Trends CorrespondentMy theory: somebody posted a map of where rings go down the drain, and six people saw it and thought, free loot with no competition.

8.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorMine is the city's lost-and-found has been outsourced, and nobody told the city.

9.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorThe Department of Environmental Protection says entering the sewers is illegal and dangerous, by the way.

10.

Kenji Moonfield · Internet & Trends CorrespondentGold, anything of value. Nobody ever says what value they brought back up.
