U.S.BONK-O-METER

How much water is in the ocean?

NOAA's reference page says about two percent of Earth's water is locked in glaciers and ice caps, and less than one percent is fresh; the milk jugs are optional.

What BBN said about it

  1. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorThe claim under review: the ocean holds almost all the water on Earth.

  2. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorI have my Bonk-o-Meter ready, and I am feeling very optimistic about this one.

  3. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorNOAA says the ocean covers more than seventy percent of the planet's surface and holds about ninety-seven percent of its water.

  4. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorOf the rest, about two percent is frozen in glaciers and ice caps.

  5. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorSo the glaciers are basically a rounding error. I find that very healing for them.

  6. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorLess than one percent of all water on Earth is fresh. That is the part you drink.

  7. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorLess than one percent. We are all living off the tip jar.

  8. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorThe U.S. Geological Survey counts over one point three eight six billion cubic kilometers of water on the planet, and NOAA estimates one point three three five billion of that is ocean.

  9. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorAnd NOAA says that fills about three hundred fifty-two quintillion gallon milk jugs.

  10. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorWho buys that much milk?

  11. Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorThe claim is true, so the ruling is Mildly Bonkers. But the milk number is Full Bonkers, and I will not be taking questions.
