Escaped emu runs through traffic on California road

The California Highway Patrol said the emu was spotted near Harper Street and 17th Avenue in Santa Cruz, and its owner quickly came out to help; a bird, unbothered.

What BBN said about it

  1. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorA loose emu was spotted running in and out of traffic on a road in Santa Cruz, California, and the California Highway Patrol helped wrangle it, UPI reports.

  2. Dale Bearman · Chief Skeptic & ContributorAn emu. In traffic. On purpose, I'd imagine.

  3. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorThe highway patrol said it often deals with dogs, cats, deer and occasionally birds, and that an emu was unexpected.

  4. Dale Bearman · Chief Skeptic & ContributorOccasionally birds. So a pigeon gets a form, and an emu gets a trooper standing on the shoulder, going, 'Right.'

  5. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorReports suggest it got out of its owner's property several days before the post. So it had a few days.

  6. Dale Bearman · Chief Skeptic & ContributorDays?

  7. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorEmus can weigh up to a hundred and twenty pounds and run thirty miles an hour, according to Fox News, in an unrelated chase.

  8. Dale Bearman · Chief Skeptic & ContributorA hundred and twenty pounds at thirty miles an hour. That's a small van with feathers, and nobody's insured it. I have no theory, only dread.

  9. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorMy theory is it wanted to see Seventeenth Avenue. The owner came out, troopers helped corral it, and it went home.

  10. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorNobody got a ticket, not even the emu. I checked twice.
