Feds want robotaxis to signal 'I'm driving' with cyan lights
The proposal would allow one or two cyan lights on the front, rear and each side of a vehicle, and it would amend a lighting standard written for human drivers.

What BBN said about it

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorFederal regulators want driverless cars to show they're driving themselves with cyan-colored lights, The Verge reports.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorSo after years of debate over flashing text, audio alerts and custom lights, the answer is one color. That's decisive leadership.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorThe lights would come on only when the automated system is driving with no human monitoring the road.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorWhen someone is expected to watch, they go off.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorAnd they're optional. A company that uses them has to meet federal rules on color, brightness, placement and operation.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorOptional.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorI'd call it a voluntary transparency framework, Hank. The car chooses whether to disclose that it's the one in charge.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorRegulators say cyan was picked partly because it's different from the blue lights police use.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorSo the car can say nobody's driving without looking like it's pulling you over.

Vera Bullock · Co-AnchorConsiderate. Nobody wants to confuse a robotaxi with a traffic stop.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorIt's still only a proposed rule, not a final one.

Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorOne report says the lamps would sit at least fifteen inches off the ground, and the material reviewed didn't explain that number.
