The real story

The reporting behind this segment. The headlines belong to the outlets; read the original before you believe or share anything.

What BBN said about it

  1. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorOne text, sent between two friends, and now it has a clarification, an update, and what I can only call a sequel.

  2. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorTalking point number one.

  3. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorPaul Bettany is now on a quest to set the record straight about his friendship with Johnny Depp, and the text in question joked about burning the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

  4. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorA quest. Frodo had a quest. This man has a publicist and a press tour about a joke.

  5. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorTalking point number two. The explanation is always longer than the offense, folks. Always. Nobody in history has made a joke shorter by explaining it.

  6. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorTalking point number three. The real issue here.

  7. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorIf one text needs an update, a clarification, and a sequel, then your phone isn't helping you communicate anymore. It's just documenting your mistakes.

  8. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorSo here's my conclusion. Send a carrier pigeon.

  9. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorNobody has ever been cancelled by a pigeon, and the pigeon has never once asked for a clarification. That's the show.

  10. Hank Ledger · Lead AnchorMy own group chat has been silent since twenty twenty-two and I have never felt safer. Brock, is it raining on anybody's friendship out there?
